02 What is the formula for speed, distance, and time?
The three related formulas form the speed-distance-time triangle:
Speed = Distance ÷ Time
Distance = Speed × Time
Time = Distance ÷ Speed

06 How does the Distance Calculator work with coordinates?
Our Distance Calculator uses the Haversine formula to calculate the straight-line (as the crow flies) distance between two geographic coordinates. Enter the latitude and longitude of both points — or select from 8 common city pair presets. Results show in km, miles, meters, and nautical miles. The Haversine formula accounts for Earth's curvature for accurate geographic distances.
07 Can I calculate TV viewing distance and projector throw distance?
Yes. Our Distance Calculator includes a TV Viewing Distance mode (optimal seating distance for 4K, 1080p, and 8K by screen size) and a Projector Throw Distance mode (lens placement distance from screen using throw ratio). For a 65-inch 4K TV, the recommended distance is 5.4–8.1 feet. For a 100-inch screen with a 1.5:1 throw ratio, the projector goes 11.4 feet away.
08 What is the difference between straight-line distance and driving distance?
Straight-line distance (as the crow flies) is the shortest possible path between two points on Earth's surface — calculated using the Haversine formula. Driving distance is the actual road distance, which is always longer due to road routes, terrain, and detours — typically 1.2× to 1.5× the straight-line distance. Our Distance Calculator shows both: the exact straight-line distance plus estimated driving, walking, and flight distances.

09 How do I add or subtract hours, minutes, and seconds?
Our Time Calculator handles sexagesimal (base-60) time arithmetic automatically. In Time Adder mode, click "Add row" to enter multiple time values — each with its own + or − toggle. The calculator carries over correctly: 45 minutes + 25 minutes = 1 hour 10 minutes, not "70 minutes." You can also use Expression mode and type directly: 2h 30m + 45m − 10s.
10 How do I calculate elapsed time between two clock times?
Use the Date+Time Offset mode in our Time Calculator. Enter your start time and toggle Subtract, then enter the end time as the offset. Example: 9:15 AM to 5:45 PM → enter 8h 30m to subtract and get the elapsed duration. For work hours tracking, add each session as a separate row in Time Adder mode and subtract break times. Overnight durations crossing midnight are handled automatically.

Yes — it works perfectly as a work hours calculator and billable time tracker. Add a row for each work session with a + sign, then add break or lunch time with a − sign. Example: +8h 30m work session, −1h lunch = 7h 30m billable time. The total updates automatically. This is ideal for freelancers, contractors, and anyone tracking daily or weekly work hours.

12 What is the correct formula for average speed?
Average Speed = Total Distance ÷ Total Time. This is not the arithmetic mean of two speeds. Example: 60 km at 60 km/h (1 hour) then 60 km at 120 km/h (0.5 hours) → Average speed = 120 ÷ 1.5 = 80 km/h, not (60+120)÷2 = 90 km/h. Total time must include all stops and breaks. 13 What is the difference between average speed and instantaneous speed?
Average speed is the total distance divided by total time for an entire journey — it accounts for slowdowns, stops, and acceleration. Instantaneous speed is your speed at any single moment — what your speedometer shows right now. Our Speed Calculator computes average speed from total distance and time. In our Travel Time Calculator, enter your distance and average speed, then toggle on the Arrival Time Calculator. Enter your departure date and time, add any planned stop time (fuel breaks, rest stops, meals), and click Calculate. The ETA (estimated time of arrival) is calculated as: Arrival = Departure + Drive Time + Stop Time. Overnight journeys crossing midnight are handled correctly.
15 What average speed should I use for a road trip calculation?
For realistic road trip estimates use: US/Canada highway → 65–75 mph (105–120 km/h) · European motorway → 80–90 mph (130–145 km/h) · Mixed roads → 55–65 mph (88–105 km/h) · City driving → 25–35 mph (40–55 km/h). For a comfortable multi-day road trip plan, use 55 mph (88 km/h) as your average — this accounts for traffic, slowdowns, and minor stops. Add separate stop time for fuel and rest breaks.

17 How does the RPM to Speed Calculator work?
Our RPM to Speed Calculator uses the formula: Speed (mph) = (RPM × π × Tire Diameter) ÷ (Gear Ratio × Axle Ratio × 1056). Enter your engine RPM (from your tachometer), tire size (diameter in inches or use our tire code converter for codes like 225/45R17), transmission gear ratio, and rear axle ratio. Results show in mph, km/h, and m/s, plus an all-gear speed chart for all 6 gears.
18 How do I enter a tire size code like 225/45R17?
In the RPM to Speed Calculator, select "Use tire size code" from the Tire Size dropdown. Then enter three values: Width (225), Aspect ratio (45), and Rim diameter (17). The calculator automatically computes the overall tire diameter using the formula: Diameter = (2 × Width × Aspect/100 + Rim × 25.4) ÷ 25.4. For 225/45R17 this gives 24.97 inches, which is used in the speed calculation.
19 Can the RPM Calculator work for bicycles and cycling cadence?
Yes. Select Bicycle/Motorcycle mode in our RPM to Speed Calculator. Enter your pedal cadence (RPM), select your wheel size (700c, 26", 27.5", etc.), and choose your gear ratio (chainring teeth ÷ sprocket teeth). Example: 90 RPM cadence, 50T/15T gear, 700c wheel → Wheel RPM = 90 × (50÷15) = 300 → Speed = 300 × π × 0.622 × 60 ÷ 1000 = 35.2 km/h.

km/h to mph: multiply by 0.62137. Example: 100 km/h × 0.62137 = 62.1 mph
mph to km/h: multiply by 1.60934. Example: 60 mph × 1.60934 = 96.6 km/h
