Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions. Simplify, convert decimals to fractions, handle mixed numbers — all with step-by-step solutions shown instantly.
Six powerful modes in one free tool. Pick the mode for your problem and get your answer with full working steps shown.
Select from Add/Divide, Mixed Numbers, Simplify, Decimal→Fraction, Fraction→Decimal, or Compare — whichever fits your problem.
Type the top number (numerator) and bottom number (denominator) into the fraction input. The blue line separates them visually.
Press Calculate and see your result instantly — displayed as a fraction, decimal, and mixed number where applicable.
Every result shows a complete step-by-step solution — find LCM, cross-multiply, simplify — so you learn the method, not just the answer.
Every calculation mode uses one of these proven fraction formulas. Our calculator applies them automatically and shows each step.
Fractions appear in everyday life — from cooking and construction to finance and physics. Here's where our free fraction calculator helps most.

Work with fractional values in formulas, unit conversions, and experimental measurements that require exact fraction arithmetic.
Verify fraction answers quickly and show students the step-by-step working process for any fraction operation.
A fraction calculator is a free online math tool that performs arithmetic operations on fractions — addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division — and also simplifies fractions, converts between decimals and fractions, handles mixed numbers, and compares fractions. Instead of doing the complex arithmetic by hand (finding LCM, cross-multiplying, simplifying using GCD), you simply enter the numbers and get an instant answer with step-by-step working.
Our online fraction calculator offers six different modes in one tool, making it more powerful than most competitors. Whether you need a simple fraction calculator for homework or a mixed fraction calculator for a more complex problem, everything is here in one place.
Adding fractions requires a common denominator. Follow these steps:
Step 1: LCM of 2 and 3 = 6
Step 2: 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6
Step 3: 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6
Step 4: GCD of 5 and 6 = 1 (already simplified)
Answer: 5/6 = 0.8333...
To simplify a fraction means reducing it to its lowest terms. Use the reduce fraction calculator mode for this. The process uses the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD):
GCD of 36 and 48 = 12
36 ÷ 12 = 3 and 48 ÷ 12 = 4
Simplified: 3/4 = 0.75
Use our decimal to fraction calculator mode. The process:
Tick the "Repeating decimal" checkbox in our repeating decimal to fraction calculator mode:
A mixed number (or mixed fraction) has a whole number part and a fraction part — like 2¾ (two and three-quarters). To operate on mixed numbers:
2¾ = 11/4 and 1½ = 3/2
LCM of 4 and 2 = 4
11/4 + 6/4 = 17/4
Answer: 17/4 = 4¼ = 4.25
Pro Tip: When dividing fractions, flip (reciprocal) the second fraction and multiply. This is called "Keep, Change, Flip" — Keep the first fraction, Change ÷ to ×, and Flip the second fraction. Example: 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8.
An improper fraction has a numerator larger than or equal to the denominator (e.g. 7/4, 9/3). Our improper fraction calculator automatically converts results to mixed numbers when appropriate, so you always see both forms. For example, 7/4 = 1¾ and 9/3 = 3 (a whole number).
To compare fractions quickly, convert both to decimals by dividing numerator by denominator, then compare. For example:
Use our Compare mode to get the answer instantly along with the decimal values for both fractions.
In our online fraction calculator, enter the numerator (top number) in the upper input box and the denominator (bottom number) in the lower box. The blue horizontal line between them visually represents the fraction bar — just like writing it on paper.
Simply divide the numerator by the denominator using long division. For example: 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. For repeating decimals like 1/3 = 1 ÷ 3 = 0.333..., the division never ends. Use our Fraction → Decimal mode to convert instantly with full decimal precision.
To compare fractions, convert them to decimals (divide numerator by denominator) or find a common denominator and compare numerators. For example: 3/4 = 0.75 vs 2/3 = 0.6667, so 3/4 is bigger. Use our Compare Fractions mode for an instant answer with full explanation.
Select the Decimal → Fraction mode in our calculator, type your decimal (e.g. 0.625), and click Calculate. The result shows the equivalent fraction (5/8) in fully simplified form. For repeating decimals like 0.666..., tick the "Repeating decimal" checkbox before calculating.
Select the Add/Sub/Mul/Div mode. Enter Fraction 1 (numerator and denominator), choose your operation (+, −, ×, ÷) from the dropdown, enter Fraction 2, then press Calculate. The answer appears as a simplified fraction, decimal, and mixed number — with all working steps shown below.
Use the Decimal → Fraction tab. For a terminating decimal like 0.375: our calculator writes it as 375/1000, finds GCD = 125, and simplifies to 3/8. For repeating decimals like 0.142857..., tick the repeating checkbox and it uses algebraic method to give 1/7.
On our online fraction calculator, each fraction has two input fields separated by a blue line — just type the top number (numerator) in the top box and the bottom number (denominator) in the bottom box. This visual format makes it as easy as writing a fraction on paper.
