An average calculator is a free online tool that finds the arithmetic mean of a set of numbers by adding them all together and dividing by how many there are. But our online average calculator goes far beyond just the mean — it also computes the median, mode, range, minimum, maximum, sum, count, and standard deviation from a single set of inputs.
Whether you need a simple number average calculator for a list of test scores, a grade average calculator for your semester results, or a weighted average calculator for subjects with different credit hours, all five modes are available in one free tool — no signup or download required.
The arithmetic mean (average) is calculated using this simple formula:
Average = Sum of all numbers ÷ Count of numbers
Scores: 82, 91, 75, 88, 94
Sum = 82 + 91 + 75 + 88 + 94 = 430
Count = 5
Average = 430 ÷ 5 = 86
To find your average grade across subjects, there are two methods depending on whether all subjects have equal weight:
Add all grade percentages and divide by the number of subjects.
Math: 88% | English: 75% | Physics: 92% | Biology: 80% | Chemistry: 85%
Sum = 88 + 75 + 92 + 80 + 85 = 420
Count = 5
Average Grade = 420 ÷ 5 = 84% → Letter Grade: B
When subjects have different credit hours, use the weighted average formula. This is how GPA is actually calculated:
Weighted Avg = Σ(Grade × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits)
Math (4 credits): 88% → 88 × 4 = 352
English (3 credits): 75% → 75 × 3 = 225
Physics (3 credits): 92% → 92 × 3 = 276
Total credits = 10 | Total weighted = 853
Weighted Average = 853 ÷ 10 = 85.3% → B
Pro Tip: Use the Grade Average tab and enter credit hours for each subject to get your weighted GPA-style average automatically. Our calculator converts the percentage to a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F) so you know where you stand at a glance.
These three "averages" measure different aspects of a dataset and are all calculated automatically by our calculator:
Numbers: 10, 20, 20, 30, 40, 50
Mean = (10+20+20+30+40+50) ÷ 6 = 28.33
Median = (20+30) ÷ 2 = 25 (average of 2 middle values)
Mode = 20 (appears twice, more than any other)
A weighted average calculator gives different importance to different values based on their assigned weight. It is used for GPA calculations, investment portfolio returns, and any situation where some values count more than others.
For example, if your Physics exam is worth 40% of your final grade and assignments are worth 20%, you cannot simply average them — you need the weighted average. Our weighted mode handles this automatically.
To find the average of a set of percentages, simply treat each percentage as a plain number and apply the arithmetic mean formula. For example, if survey responses were 78%, 85%, 92%, 67%, and 88%:
Average = (78 + 85 + 92 + 67 + 88) ÷ 5 = 82%
Our percentage average calculator mode automatically strips the % symbol from inputs and computes the mean, displaying the result with a % sign so it is immediately meaningful.
An average calculator is a free online tool that finds the arithmetic mean (average) of a set of numbers — and also shows median, mode, min, max, range, sum, count, and standard deviation. Our average calculator has five modes: basic numbers, weighted average, grade average, percentage average, and time average.
To find the average of a set of numbers: add all the numbers together, then divide by how many numbers there are. Formula: Average = Sum ÷ Count. For example, the average of 10, 20, 30, 40 = (10+20+30+40) ÷ 4 = 100 ÷ 4 = 25. Enter your numbers into our calculator and press Calculate to get this result instantly.
Enter your numbers into the Numbers Average tab (separated by commas or new lines), then click Calculate Average. The formula used is: Average = (Sum of all numbers) ÷ (Count of numbers). The result also shows you median, mode, min, max, and standard deviation — all from the same calculation.
Use our Grade Average tab. Enter each subject name, your grade percentage, and optional credit hours. Click Calculate to find your overall average grade and its letter grade equivalent (A, B, C, D, or F). If all subjects have equal credit hours (or leave credits blank), it calculates a simple average. With different credit hours, it uses the weighted average formula — which is how GPA is actually calculated.
Enter all your subject grades into the Grade Average tab and click Calculate. If you haven't finished all your exams yet, enter the grades you have so far — the calculator shows your current average, helping you predict what your final average would be if the remaining grades are similar. You can also estimate by entering a predicted grade for missing subjects.
Mean = arithmetic average (sum ÷ count) — most common, affected by outliers. Median = the middle value after sorting — not affected by outliers, better for skewed data like income. Mode = the value that appears most often — useful for finding the most common result. Our calculator shows all three automatically every time you calculate an average.
