Audiobook Speed Calculator Formula — How It Works

The audiobook speed calculator formula is: New Time = Original Time ÷ Speed. Time saved = Original Time × (1 − 1/Speed). Our audiobook speed calculator online applies this formula automatically for every speed in the comparison table.

Example — Sapiens (19h 47min) at 1.5x speed

Original: 19h 47min = 1,187 minutes
At 1.5x: 1,187 ÷ 1.5 = 791.3 minutes = 13h 11min
Time saved: 1,187 − 791 = 396 minutes = 6 hours 36 minutes saved
At 1hr/day listening: finished in 14 days instead of 20 days

How to Calculate Audiobook Length from Page Count

If you have a physical book and want to estimate the audiobook listening time, use this formula: Hours = (Pages × 275) ÷ 9,300. This assumes the average page has about 275 words and the average narrator reads at 155 words per minute (9,300 words/hour).

Example — 400-page novel

Estimated words: 400 × 275 = 110,000 words
At 155 wpm narration: 110,000 ÷ 155 = 710 minutes = ~11.8 hours at 1x speed
At 1.5x: 11.8 ÷ 1.5 = ~7.9 hours (7h 52min)

Use our calculator's Page Count mode for this conversion automatically — just enter the page count and select your speed.

Audiobook Speed and Comprehension — What the Research Says

Multiple studies have examined how playback speed affects comprehension and retention:

The key insight from research at the University of California is that regular practice at higher speeds improves your ability to comprehend fast audio over time. Start at 1.25x and gradually increase every few weeks.

Pro audiobook tip: Use the "chapter-by-chapter" approach — listen to a new, challenging book at 1.25x for comprehension, then re-listen to your favorite passages at 1.5x–2x for efficient review. This maximizes both learning and time efficiency.

Common Questions

Audiobook Speed Calculator FAQ

Everything you need to know about using our free audiobook speed calculator online.

Does listening at higher speed affect comprehension?

Research shows most people can listen at 1.5x with little or no comprehension loss. At 2x, comprehension begins to drop for complex or unfamiliar material, but remains acceptable for fiction and familiar topics. At 2.5x and above, significant retention loss occurs for most people. The good news: your brain adapts with practice. Start at 1.25x for a week, then move to 1.5x. Regular speed listeners typically reach comfortable 1.75x–2x comprehension within 2–3 months of practice. Use our audiobook speed calculator online to see exactly how much time you save at each speed for your specific book.

What is the best audiobook playback speed?

1.5x is the most widely recommended speed — it saves 33% of listening time while maintaining strong comprehension. Surveys of regular audiobook listeners show 1.5x is the most common choice. For dense non-fiction or technical books, start at 1.25x. For light fiction you are enjoying for pleasure, 1.75x–2x is comfortable for most experienced listeners. For language learning, stick to 1x. Use our audiobook speed calculator to see the exact time impact of any speed on your specific book — simply enter the book length and our audiobook speed calculator online shows all speeds at once.

How many audiobooks can I finish per year at 2x speed?

The average audiobook is about 10–11 hours at 1x speed. At 2x, that is 5–5.5 hours per book. If you listen for 1 hour per day: at 1x = ~33 books/year, at 1.5x = ~50 books/year, at 2x = ~66 books/year. Most audiobook enthusiasts who listen during commutes (30–60 min/day) finish 20–50 books per year at speeds between 1.5x and 2x. Use the daily listening goal field in our calculator to see exactly how many days your next book will take.

How do I find the length of an audiobook on Audible?

On Audible: the length is shown on the book's product page under "Program Type" or in the "Product Details" section. In the Audible app, tap on any title and look at the progress bar or the details screen. On Amazon, it is listed in the product details as "Listening Length." For Libby/OverDrive, the duration is shown on the book's detail page. You can also find audiobook lengths on Goodreads — just click the audiobook edition. Once you have the length, enter it into our audiobook speed calculator for instant results at any speed.

How do I calculate listening time from page count?

Use the formula: Listening hours = (Pages × 275) ÷ 9,300. This assumes 275 words per page (paperback average) and 155 words per minute narration speed. Example: a 400-page book = (400 × 275) ÷ 9,300 = 110,000 ÷ 9,300 = ~11.8 hours. Switch to Page Count mode in our audiobook calculator — just enter the page number and we handle the conversion automatically. Note: this is an estimate, as actual narration speed varies by narrator (130–180 wpm).

Does this calculator work for podcasts?

Yes — our audiobook speed calculator works for any audio content, including podcasts, lectures, course recordings, and YouTube videos. Enter the episode or video length in hours and minutes, select your playback speed (most podcast apps support 1.5x and 2x), and see the adjusted time instantly. Many podcast listeners use 1.75x–2x for interview shows and 1.25x–1.5x for educational content. The formula is identical: new time = original time ÷ speed.

How much time can I save by increasing audiobook speed?

Time savings formula: Saved = Original × (1 − 1/Speed). At 1.25x on 10 hours: saves 2 hours. At 1.5x: saves 3h 20min. At 2x: saves 5 hours. Over a full year of audiobook listening (say 200 total hours), switching from 1x to 1.5x saves 66 hours — nearly 3 full days of audio time. Switching to 2x saves 100 hours per year. Our speed comparison table shows these savings for your specific book with every speed option displayed side by side.
